Early in the morning the Paddle Battle staff learned that the truck containing all of the Paddle Battle equipment, including many of our kayaks for Paddle Battle and Junior Paddle Battle, had been stolen. A call went out to Mayor Shannon Glover and Police Chief Stephen Jenkins at 4:00 AM and the City sprang into action. The Mayor woke up First Citizen and retired USCG Officer Jim Cullen who quickly put out the call for help. By start time, volunteers from all over the City were on site to save the day and make the 5th Annual Portsmouth Paddle Battle happen.
The 5th Annual Portsmouth Paddle Battle is in the books and, despite a challenging beginning, was a huge success.
The truck was recovered by 10:00 AM (thank you Chief Jenkins!) but all of the kayaks loaned by Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve, and all of the Paddle Battle alcohol, were lost. Please let us know if you see a bunch of drunks in stolen kayaks. The stolen kayaks, which are loaned to us each year by Hoffler Creek, are their rental kayaks and are a large part of their support revenue. Although the Paddle Battle paid to replace he stolen kayaks, please consider donating to Hoffler Creek.

WAVY TV ultimately called the 5th Annual Paddle Battle THE MIRACLE ON HIGH STREET. A huge Thank You to all of the citizens of Portsmouth who came to the rescue.
